Topics in the March 2025 Issue

The March 2025 Journal (Issue 113) contains more interesting new articles for Cape, Zululand and CGH.

The De La Rue Cape of Good Hope Triangular issues of 1863-64 is the first article in the Journal. These beautiful stamps appeared in two significant Corinphila Auctions in November 2018 and June 2019 (Besancon Parts I and II) and as the major rarities of the De La Rue printings were included, it was possible to include numerous images in the article.

A second topic for which I have been accumulating covers for some time is that of Charges for Underpaid Postage on covers sent from Natal as well as arriving in Natal from overseas locations. For those like myself who love subcollections within collections, this is very fertile territory as these underpaid covers pop up quite frequently at auction and are inexpensive. What makes them so fascinating is the diverse ways in which the charges were applied, using a variety of figures and markings, as demonstrated by the 12 covers which appear in the article.

Keith Klugman continues his tale of Postmaster Provisional Half-Penny Envelopes of Natal, with a number of new findings .Keith’s database of covers continues to grow and there are 90 documented envelopes. Sheets of high value Natal Replica King Edward Postage Stamps appeared on eBay a week ago, and are shown in cut-down images.

Another Natal article, but this one on a completely new aspect of Revenue collecting, is included: Cape, Natal and Southern African Postal Orders. Even if you don’t collect Revenue stamps, this article may pique your interest, especially when you view the miniature works of art created by none other than De La Rue.

Finally, a Well-travelled Letter Card from Zululand completes the pieces in the Journal.
