Topics in the December 2024 Issue

The December 2024 Journal (Issue 112) contains more interesting new articles for Cape, Zululand and CGH.

We round off the 2024 Journal with articles by John Courtis, Chris Dorn, Roger Porter, Keith Klugman and Simon Solomon, extending our coverage into several new aspects of philately. Thanks are due to Guy Rothery for preparing the 2024 Cape & Natal Study Circle Accounts. These reflect a continued state of good health of the Circle.

Three Enduring Mysteries of the Cape of Good Hope Triangular issues of 1853-64 are tackled by Chris Dorn in the first of his articles on this subject.

John Courtis returns to the Journal and has provided a review of the Cyclopaedia of Overprinted Private Wrappers which contains material from some 217 countries.

Roger Porter’s Natal article entitled a Printed Advert on a Newspaper Wrapper demonstrates precisely how interesting these artefacts can be.

Another look at the Natal Telegraph issue of 1881, with a careful comparison of the colours used in the lower denominations (1d to 2/-) suggests that there were at least two printings which used different dyes, one at the inception of the Issue and a second at a later date

Keith Klugman has provided three masterly Natal pieces: A Census of the Recorded Examples of the Privately Printed Postcard of Durban from the Berea, the Use of Penny Embossed Stamp on the Natal Star Newspaper and Sailing Dates of Union and Castle Line Steamers from the UK to the Cape in 1884-85 and 1892-95.

Zululand features in Two Unusual Covers from a Spink Auction and the major compendium of work entitled Postmarks of Southern Africa by Alex Visser and Roger Porter.
