The Cape figures in five articles, including “An Unusual Way to Win a Tender”, where De La Rue had to submit a tender for the 1889 issue, using an embossed head of the King of Italy. An article on ‘Found Open’ and ‘Officially Closed’ labels spans both the Cape and Natal, while another, on ‘The Overprinted Two Pence ‘Hope’ stamp, is about an essay which never made it to the starting blocks.
Turning to Natal, Roger Porter has done a great job in providing two specialist articles – Postal Stationery and Private Wrappers, and Photographic Enlargements of the Perkins Bacon Die Proofs for the 3d, 1d and 6d Chalon stamps. Two other Natal articles have been prepared, one by Keith Klugman and Roger and a second by Roger and Bram Leeflang.
Finally, two Zululand covers, each of which were sent by Captain Cramer during the 1879 Zulu War and which bear the Natal 6d violet with an inverted overprinted POSTAGE, are included.
