Topics in the September 2020 Issue
For the Cape, an article covering “The First Rectangular Issue 1864-77” and Two Covers sent to Graaff Reinet follows on from the first Cape article. Other articles cover the unrecorded Postmark of Paarl Rivers and a POA of Mariannhill.
Natal is catered for by some detailed studies, both large and small. The Chalon Head and its Origins Revisited builds upon the brilliant work done by John Dickson 20 years ago, aided in this revisit by the availability of gorgeous images of Queen Victoria and the first Chalon Heads. The very handy ‘family tree’ of the Chalons which John developed, entitled The Evolution of the Chalon Series, has been reprinted. Two snippets, Christmas Wishes and Combination Covers reflects the amazing amount of Natal material which continues to appear on eBay.
The Dickson Sale at Spink in October 2020 selects a number of highlights from the myriad of covers and stamps that were available. In addition to these there are many other unique and eye-catching items which deserve to be presented in forthcoming articles. One Penny Chalon with Inverted and Reversed Watermark on Cover and Manuscript Cancellations of Bushman’s River on Natal Embossed Issue.
For Zululand, the Dickson Sale and the June 2020 Spink Auction provide some excellent covers, which, after some research yield up some interesting histories.
