Journal Topics - September 2019
Topics in the September 2019 Issue:
The Cape Woodblocks and the man who was responsible for their creation, Saul Solomon, are covered in a new article. Both the stamps and the man behind them don’t seem to have had much coverage in recent times, so it’s a good time to present the details once more, especially since it’s possible to include some attractive images of the varieties.
Keith Klugman has provided us with a very timely article on the Natal 1869 Overprints, celebrating the 150th anniversary of their issue. This focuses on the local use of the stamps and provides a detailed record of known covers and images where these are available. Keith has indicated that he will prepare two further articles which cover the overseas uses of the issues.
Roger Porter continues and completes his very detailed study of the Natal Post Office Agencies. The first part of the article, published in the June 2019 Quarter Journal, evoked interest from other members and I understand that at least one other article is in the pipeline.
Zululand Forgeries are featured in a most authoritative analysis by Peter Whitmore, who maintains and updates a database of these miscreants as he comes across them in auction catalogues. I was astonished to learn of the breadth and depth of the forgeries and naturally looked closely at my own Zululand collection, finding at least one forged stamp. I highly recommend that members do the same and especially keep a look-out when buying more Zululand items.
Apart from the above there is the usual sprinkling of images of postcards, forged stamps and medals in the Journal.
