Topics in the June 2024 Issue

The June 2024 Journal (Issue 110) contains more interesting new articles for Cape, Zululand and CGH.

We examine the Reverend Lewis Grout and in particular the Mail forwarded to his Mission at Umsunduzi, Natal in the mid-19th Century. Apart from their religious and social activities, the early Natal Missionaries played an important part in the use and growth of postal services, creating focal places where letters were both sent and received.

The Penny Bisects of Natal Stamps from remote Missionary Outposts have been investigated, noting how German and Norwegian missionaries employed this approach to overcome the lack of ½d stamps, something that the Natal Postal Authorities appeared to accept, but not so their counterparts in Europe.

The Cape receives attention through a short article about  De La Rue’s bombed Edwardian Specimens, some of which survived the World War II bombings of 1940, as did De La Rue through the assistance of some of its competitors.

A close look at Stellaland, Vryburg and the surcharged Cape Hope Stamps  uncovers the bizarre story of how Stellaland came about, how it was unceremoniously disbanded and how the Vryburg stamps of 1899 arose from the ashes. The Town House in Cape Town on a postcard also receives a mention.

A short look at An Extraordinary Price paid for a £20 Natal Edwardian, followed by Natal UPU Edwardian Specimens, a major work on 19th Century Natal Mourning Covers  and a short snippet on two Natal High Value forgeries.

Zululand rounds of the Journal, in the guise of John Robert Dunn – Trader, Interpreter and Zulu Chieftain- which sounds a bit mysterious, but so was this particular gentleman, who played a significant part in the history of both Natal and Zululand.
